Field-by-field comparison

Compare the evidence before choosing an MCP.

Each signal stays separate, missing facts remain visible, and the column order follows your selection.

Task fit
Best for
  • Market/economic data retrieval for analysis and research
  • Users already holding an Alpha Vantage API key
  • Querying invoices, orders, subscriptions, disputes, and shipment information
  • Sandbox prototyping of merchant workflows
  • Teams able to issue, scope, rotate, and monitor PayPal credentials
Not ideal for
  • Trading or order-execution workflows
  • Users who need a free unlimited market-data service
  • Unattended production payment, refund, or invoice decisions
  • Users without PayPal developer credential management
  • Assistants that only need public PayPal documentation
Avoid when
  • You might mistake informational data for trading advice
  • You cannot manage API-key quotas/costs
  • Production financial actions would execute without explicit confirmation
  • Access tokens must be embedded in committed configuration
  • Merchant-account activity cannot be monitored and credentials cannot be revoked quickly

Client coverage noteLocal stdio runs on your computer. Streamable HTTP connects to a remotely hosted MCP server.
Access and data
AuthenticationHosted endpoint uses OAuth-style browser authorization where the user enters an Alpha Vantage API key. Legacy API-key-in-URL connection is deprecated. Local stdio accepts the Alpha Vantage API key as the local server credential.Local mode uses PAYPAL_ACCESS_TOKEN and PAYPAL_ENVIRONMENT. Remote mode supports PayPal login and consent or token authorization; PayPal publishes separate Sandbox and Production endpoints.
CostA free Alpha Vantage API key is available; premium/realtime data entitlements or higher usage may require a paid Alpha Vantage plan. The MCP package is publicly available. Normal PayPal account, transaction, product, API, and merchant-service fees or limits remain applicable.
PermissionsRead-only market/economic/financial data retrieval. Current data tools are annotated readOnlyHint=true and destructiveHint=false. No brokerage/order placement/account mutation authority is part of the canonical tool surface.Capabilities depend on enabled tools and the PayPal credential and can include reads and mutations across invoices, orders, subscriptions, disputes, shipments, transaction details, and related merchant resources.
Data handlingQueries are sent to Alpha Vantage market-data APIs. Returned market/economic/company data is exposed to the connected MCP client/LLM. The canonical surface is market-data retrieval rather than private brokerage-account control. The local MCP process sends merchant, customer, payment, and task data to PayPal APIs and returns results to the MCP client. The hosted option processes requests through PayPal's remote MCP service.
Limitations
Tradeoffs
  • Read-only market data is safer than transaction-capable finance MCPs
  • Financial data still carries licensing, timeliness, and decision-risk considerations
  • The local npm server is portable and publisher documented, but executes package code on the user's machine.
  • The documented `--tools=all` setup is convenient but exposes a broad commerce surface; narrower tool selection is safer where supported.
  • Sandbox reduces financial impact but does not replace production authorization and operational controls.
Risk contextLow mutation risk because the canonical MCP surface is read-only data retrieval. Main operational risks are external market-data dependency, API-key handling, rate/plan limits, and financial-data freshness/entitlement differences.Production access can create financial loss or customer-facing changes and can disclose transaction data. Start with Sandbox, keep credentials out of files and history, minimize tools, and require approval for every mutation.
