Field-by-field comparison

Compare the evidence before choosing an MCP.

Each signal stays separate, missing facts remain visible, and the column order follows your selection.

Task fit
Best for
  • Inspecting and manipulating Redis strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, streams, JSON, and search indexes
  • Development workflows using a dedicated local or test Redis database
  • Redis documentation search and operational investigation
  • Exploring schemas, collections, queries, indexes, and performance information
  • Providing development assistants with read-only MongoDB context
  • Scoped MongoDB Atlas project and cluster administration
Not ideal for
  • Read-only analytics when write-capable Redis tools cannot be disabled or constrained by ACL
  • Production databases shared with latency-sensitive applications
  • Unattended production database changes
  • Large exports or unrestricted collection access from a general-purpose AI client
Avoid when
  • The Redis credential grants unrestricted access to production keys
  • TLS certificate verification is disabled for a remote Redis connection
  • The agent must not read, overwrite, publish, expire, or delete Redis data
  • The database user or Atlas service account is broader than the intended workflow
  • Read-only mode cannot be enabled for exploratory use
  • Sensitive query results must not be exposed to the selected AI client

Access and data
AuthenticationSupports Redis username/password URLs, individual credential options, TLS through `rediss://`, CA certificate verification, cluster mode, and Microsoft Entra ID authentication for Azure Managed Redis.Supports MongoDB connection strings and MongoDB authentication mechanisms, including enterprise OIDC, LDAP, Kerberos, and X.509 where supported. Atlas management tools use an appropriately permissioned Atlas service account.
CostThe first-party server is open source and the PyPI package documents no MCP usage fee. Redis Cloud, infrastructure, network, container, and AI-client costs remain separate. The official MCP server is open source and has no separately documented server fee. MongoDB Atlas, Enterprise Advanced, infrastructure, data transfer, and AI-client charges remain applicable.
PermissionsThe server can read and write Redis keys and data structures, operate streams and pub/sub, manage search indexes, and inspect server information according to the connected Redis user's ACL. Redis ACL configuration is the effective permission boundary.Database operations run with the connected MongoDB user's roles; Atlas operations require an Atlas service account with the relevant project permissions. The real --readOnly/readOnly mode prevents registration of create, update, and delete tools, and disabledTools can further reduce the surface. Its configuration default is false even though official client/setup examples may recommend or include --readOnly.
Data handlingThe stdio server runs locally and sends Redis query inputs and returned key values to the connected MCP client. It connects directly to the configured Redis deployment. Credentials can be supplied in a URI, CLI arguments, or environment variables; avoid embedding them in shareable config and logs. The local MCP process connects to the configured MongoDB deployment and returns query, schema, index, and Atlas results to the AI client. Export features can write query or aggregation results to local files. Telemetry collection can be configured or disabled; logs may contain operational metadata and must be handled appropriately.
Limitations
Tradeoffs
  • The server supports a wide Redis data surface, which is useful but makes the database credential the primary security boundary.
  • Running through uvx is simple but `@latest` is mutable; pin a reviewed release for repeatable deployments.
  • Connection URLs are convenient but can expose usernames and passwords in process arguments or client configuration.
  • The server combines database and Atlas management tools, which is convenient but requires separately scoped database and Atlas credentials.
  • Read-only mode limits database mutation but must be intentionally retained; omitting `--readOnly` enables writes.
  • Telemetry and index-checking features are configurable and should be reviewed for the deployment.
Risk contextA broad Redis tool set can expose or mutate application state, sessions, queues, cached records, and vector data. Use a dedicated database, a narrowly scoped ACL user, verified TLS, pinned releases, and backups. This review does not claim MCP100 execution testing. The main risks are disclosure or mutation of database records and over-broad Atlas administration. Server-side JavaScript execution is disabled by default, but MongoDB user/RBAC permissions remain the data-authority boundary. Start with --readOnly, a dedicated least-privilege database user, narrowly scoped Atlas service credentials, disabled unnecessary tools and telemetry, and non-production data.
