Field-by-field comparison

Compare the evidence before choosing an MCP.

Each signal stays separate, missing facts remain visible, and the column order follows your selection.

Task fit
Best for
  • Searching Stripe documentation and support knowledge from an MCP client
  • Inspecting Stripe account, balance, customer, product, and payment data
  • Creating supported Stripe resources in a test account with human confirmation
  • Schema exploration and database-aware coding in development environments
  • Connecting one MCP layer to supported Google Cloud and third-party databases
  • Defining structured, parameterized database tools with integrated authentication and observability
Not ideal for
  • Unattended production payment administration
  • Workflows that require Stripe API operations not exposed by the current tool set
  • Unrestricted natural-language SQL against production data
  • Teams unwilling to operate and secure a local or hosted Toolbox process
Avoid when
  • The client cannot protect Stripe authorization tokens or secret keys
  • You cannot require confirmation for write-capable payment tools
  • Untrusted content can influence the same agent session without tool isolation
  • The configured database user can modify production data or schema beyond the approved task
  • Sensitive query results cannot be sent to the AI client
  • Credentials would be committed in tools.yaml or MCP configuration

Access and data
AuthenticationThe hosted https://mcp.stripe.com endpoint uses Stripe OAuth. Stripe also documents a local path using Stripe credentials; prefer Restricted API Keys with only the required permissions, and keep live versus sandbox context explicit. Do not infer Agent-Key or session-revocation behavior beyond current Stripe MCP documentation.Authentication depends on the database source and can include database username/password, Google Cloud IAM, or other source-specific mechanisms. Use a dedicated read-only identity and secret manager or protected environment variables.
CostStripe documents no separate MCP access fee. Normal Stripe product, transaction, account, and chosen AI-client charges still apply; ChatGPT custom connector availability also depends on an eligible ChatGPT plan. The Apache-licensed Toolbox and npm server have no documented MCP usage fee. Database services, Google Cloud resources, network transfer, observability backends, hosting, and the AI client may incur normal charges.
PermissionsThe hosted server receives OAuth access selected during Stripe authorization. The documented tool set includes read operations and write operations such as creating customers, products, prices, payment links, invoices, coupons, refunds, and disputes-related actions; actual access remains bounded by the authorized Stripe account and credential.Effective permissions come from each configured database identity and the enabled prebuilt or custom tools. Generic prebuilt sets can include schema discovery and execute_sql; custom tools can constrain statements, parameters, and accessible sources.
Data handlingRequests and tool results pass between the MCP client, Stripe's hosted MCP endpoint, and the connected Stripe account. The server can return account and payment-related records plus Stripe knowledge-base content to the client. A local @stripe/mcp process receives the configured STRIPE_SECRET_KEY. Do not place live secret keys in shared configuration or logs. The Toolbox process connects directly to configured databases and returns selected schemas, rows, query results, and errors to the MCP client. Credentials may be supplied through environment variables or configuration; integrated cloud authentication and OpenTelemetry are available.
Limitations
Tradeoffs
  • The hosted endpoint simplifies setup and uses OAuth, while the local package can use a secret key and therefore expands local credential-handling responsibility.
  • Stripe labels the MCP service a public preview, so tools and behavior can change.
  • Tool access is convenient but can create or modify payment-related resources within the granted Stripe account.
  • Prebuilt tools are quick to adopt but may expose generic execute_sql capability; custom tools require more design but provide a narrower contract.
  • The npx path is convenient but the publisher recommends binary or container installation for standard reliable deployments.
  • Supporting many database engines increases configuration flexibility and operational complexity.
Risk contextThis is a write-capable financial integration. Use test mode for evaluation, least privilege, explicit confirmation for every mutation, separate untrusted web content from payment actions, and revoke MCP sessions promptly when no longer needed. This review relies on publisher documentation and does not claim MCP100 execution testing.Generic SQL tools can expose or mutate large amounts of data and retrieved database text can carry prompt-injection content. Prefer a non-production replica, read-only credentials, allow-listed custom parameterized tools, query limits, audit logs, and no secrets in config. This review does not claim MCP100 execution testing.
